When a gem is placed in contact with a metal on a ring, it is called inlaying, or simply, setting. Until recently, jewelers used inlaying to encrust all kinds of gems onto precious metals, without paying much attention to the specific qualities of the former. This had the downside of sometimes obscuring even the main characteristics, especially in the case of semitransparent stones.
