The marquise cut diamond originated in mid 18th Century when Louis XV of France allegedly commissioned to cut the gemstone in a way that it resembled the shape of Jeanne Antoinette Poisson’s lips, who was his mistress. The term ‘marquise’ alludes to the in-between rank to that of a count as well as a duke.
