From a structural standpoint, the bright
cut pavé will be more durable. This is because the modern
pavé does not have a sidewall. This means the
diamonds are not protected within a
channel, but right on the surface with nothing but tiny beads holding them in place. It is a good look for a ring to be sure, but also a good way to lose a
diamond.
Another problem with the modern
pavé is that it weakens the metal after the jeweler
cuts a row of cups to hold the
pavé stones. That makes the metal choice crucial.
Platinum, being a stronger metal than
gold, is a good option.
Pavé setting are incredibly hard to resize. Any distortion to the
ring metal can
damage the cups, which can push out the
pave diamonds from their little
prongs or
beads. With more
pave set on a
shank, you would have to contend with a higher number of vulnerably placed
stones.
