It will be challenging for even a trained eye to spot the difference in one go.
In order to avoid this, make sure that the
diamond ring that you purchase comes with an authenticity certificate by GIA or AGS. However, it is not necessary that the
diamond ring that you got as a gift or as an heirloom has an authenticity certificate. Luckily, there are some easy at-home tests, with which you can spot an artificial
diamond ring.
One of the basic tests is to thoroughly check the
metal settings and mountings of your
ring. A real
diamond will be usually secured by employing high-quality
settings such as
halo,
pave,
side stones, etc. Similarly, the
metal choices will be often
platinum,
yellow gold, and
white gold.
In order to ensure the quality of the
metal band, you can check its inner side for markings such as plat, 22k, etc. Note that if the gemstones have engraving like CZ, it is not a real
diamond because CZ indicates Cubic Zirconia. Apart from this, some of the common tests you can consider to find a fake
diamond include fog test, UV light test, heat test, water test, newspaper test, shine test, etc.
